La paloma escamosa, paloma trocal o paloma guacoa (Patagioenas speciosa) es una especie de ave de la familia Columbidae, que se encuentra en Argentina, Belice, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guayana francesa, Guyana, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Surinam, Trinidad y Tobago y Venezuela.1
Hábitat
Vive en el dosel y el borde del bosque, bosque de galería y campos arbolados.2
Descripción
Mide 302 a 36 cm de longitud y pesa 2903 a 320 g. El macho presenta la corona y la región superior entre rufo y castaño purpúreo. El cuello, el pecho y la parte superior de la espalda son de color y blancuzco, con un notorio escamado metálico de líneas color verde lustroso a negro purpúreo. El abdomen es blanco, vagamente escamado con marrón purpúreo, y las primarias y la cola son de negras parduzcas. Presenta pico rojo brillante con la punta blanca. La hembra opaca, con el plumaje marrón mate4 y el escamado del cuello sin el brillo metálico y con líneas negruzcas.
Su llamada es una serie de profundos arrullos cro-ku ks.5
Alimentación
Se alimenta de frutos y semillas.2
Reproducción
Construye en matorrales sobre helechos como Pteridium aquilinum o en helechos arbóreos Cyathea3 o árboles, un nido en forma de plataforma amplia, levemente cóncava, hecho de palitos e inflorescencias ramificadas secas. La hembra pone un huevo blanco.4
Scaled pigeon
The scaled pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa)[ is a large New World tropical dove. It is a resident breeder from southern Mexicosouth to western Ecuador, southern Brazil, northern Argentina, and Trinidad.
The scaled pigeon is fairly common in semi-open forest. It builds a stick platform nest in a tree and lays two white eggs.
Its flight is high, fast and direct, with the regular beats and an occasional sharp flick of the wings which are characteristic of pigeons in general. It is usually very wary, since it is frequently hunted.
The scaled pigeon is 36 cm (14 in) long and weighs normally about 290 g (10 oz). Adult males have mainly purple brown plumage, with a paler scaly appearance to the neck and underparts. The lower underparts are whitish edged with purple. The eyering, legs and bill are red, the latter having a white tip. The female is dull dark brown rather than purplish, and is slightly smaller than the male.
Scaled pigeons feed mainly on forest fruits and seeds. The call is a series of deep cooing cro ku-ks that differs markedly from that of its relatives, such as the white-crowned pigeon.[ This is a solitary bird which does not form flocks.
The scaled pigeon has been recorded as successfully nesting on a fern (Pteridium aquilinum at ground level, and in the canopy of the tree fern Cyathea cyatheoides). The pearl kite visits nests of this species as a natural predator.[
