El ermitaño rojizo o ermitaño chico (Phaethornis ruber) es una especie de ave de la familia Trochilidae, que se encuentra en Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela y las Guayanas.

Distribución y hábitat

Vive en los bosques de la Amazonia, el piedemonte oriental de los Andes, la Orinoquia y en las zonas costeras del Atlántico de las Guayanas y Brasil.

Descripción

Mide entre 8,6 a 9 cm de longitud y pesa de 1,8 a 2,5 g. Es uno de los pájaros más pequeños. Su pecho, vientre y rabadilla son de color óxido o naranja rojizo. Presenta barbilla y motas en la base de las patas blancuzcas o amarillentas. Partes superiores con pintas negras, color castaño rufo o rojizo. El macho presenta una estrecha faja negra a la altura del pecho y corona. La hembra tiene una coloración más pálida y no posee la faja negra. El pico, curvado, tiene 2 a 2,3 cm de largo.

Reproducción

Construye entre hojas de palmeras un nido, a una altura del suelo de 1 a 3 m, con forma de bolsa, utilizando suaves, telaraña y restos vegetales. La hembra pone 2 huevos blancos e incuba durante unos 15 días. Los polluelos nacen con el pico corto y suave, como todos los colibríes, y abandonan el nido después de 18 a 22 días.

Reddish hermit

The reddish hermit (Phaethornis ruber) is a species of bird in the family Trochilidae, the hummingbirds. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and in the Guianas. At 7.5 cm (3 in) and a weight under 3 grams, it is among the smallest of the hermits and smallest birds overall. Its natural habitats are forest and woodland, primarily humid.

Distribution

Range in Amazon Basin, SE-Brazil

The majority of the reddish hermit’s range, in northern and central South America, is the entire Amazon Basin to the foothill drainages of the eastern Andes slope. The Caribbean and Atlantic coasts of the entire Guianas are included in the northeast; in the southeast, the southeastern limit is the eastern banks of the Tocantins River in the Araguaia-Tocantins River system, usually included as part of the Amazon Basin. The countries included in the bird’s range in the western Amazon Basin drainage are Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Besides the reddish hermit’s range in the Amazon Basin, to the northwest it is found in southern and eastern Venezuela adjacent to the Guianas; this is most of the eastern portions of Venezuela’s Orinoco River drainage. A second large contiguous and disjunct range exists on the southeastern Atlantic coastal strip of Brazil, up to about 350 km wide, for about 4,500 km. The strip extends from northeastern states Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba in the north, to southern São Paulo state. This coastal strip avoids most of the interior Cerrado region.
