White-bellied piculet

The white-bellied piculet (Picumnus spilogaster) is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It is found in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

These poorly known piculets lives in gallery forests, deciduous forests, and second growth where they like forest borders, mangroves, swampy areas, and clearings. Both males and females have black caps with white speckles, and males have red streaking on the crown. Individuals or pairs hop along branches or in tangles pecking at branches for food as they go. They often prefer to be higher in trees. Few pieces of additional life history information are currently available for these resident piculets.

Sometimes considered to include P. nigropunctatus, but the two differ vocally. Race pallidus sometimes considered a separate species, or treated as race of P. minutissimus, but appears very close morphologically to other forms of present species. Previously listed form P. leucogaster (described from R Cauamé, Roraima, N Brazil) is synonym of nominate spilogaster, showing complete gradation towards typical spilogaster; possibly represents a link between nominate and orinocensis, exhibiting some intermediate features. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Picumnus spilogaster orinocensis (Zimmer & Phelps, 1950)
Picumnus spilogaster pallidus (E. Snethlage, 1924)
Picumnus spilogaster spilogaster (Sundevall, 1866)

Conservation Status

Conservation status on BirdlifeVU Vulnerable

VULNERABLE. Poorly known, and no data available on numbers. No definite records for Suriname or French Guiana, making range smaller than previously thought. Uncommon in llanos and Delta Amacuro of Venezuela. Based on a model of future deforestation in the Amazon basin, it is suspected that the population of this species will decline by ≥30% over the next three generations; it was therefore uplisted to Vulnerable in 2012 BirdLife International (2014) Species factsheet: Picumnus spilogaster.
